How to use this template

This template is for house captain, sports captain and prefect elections, roles common in Australia, New Zealand, the UK, Ireland, South Africa, India and many international schools. Houses are the teams students belong to for carnivals, sports days and competitions, and voters want a captain who brings energy, includes everyone and turns up. Prefects are student leaders who help staff, set an example and support younger students. The cards cover a greeting, your link to the house or school, what you have already done, how you will get everyone involved, one fresh idea, a prefect-specific card, and a warm close. Drop the cards that do not fit your role. It suits a one to two-minute speech at a house meeting or assembly.

Tips

  • Show house spirit, but keep it friendly. A short chant or cheer at the end can work well if your school allows it.
  • Talk about participation as much as winning. Teachers often choose captains who encourage students who are not the sportiest.
  • Give one specific example of reliability, such as always helping set up for an event; it is more convincing than calling yourself reliable.
  • Keep your speech within the time limit and practise it in a loud, clear voice, since house meetings are often held outdoors or in large halls.
  • Make eye contact with the younger students; they make up much of the vote in many houses.
  • Thank your house or school community, not just the teachers; the people voting want to feel noticed.
  • Practise smiling as you speak. Energy and warmth are a large part of what makes a house captain speech work.

Make it fit

  • For a sports captain speech, swap the prefect card for one on training, sportsmanship and supporting every team.
  • For a prefect speech with no houses, replace the house cards with your connection to the school and how you will help staff and students.
  • For a written application instead of a speech, turn each card into a short paragraph with the same headings.
  • For a 30-second speech, keep the greeting, one example, the idea and the close.
  • In the US, where houses are less common, use the same cards for a team captain, club president or spirit committee speech.
