How to use this template

A country report is one of the most common geography and social studies projects in primary and middle school. This template turns your research into a five-minute presentation that covers what teachers usually ask for: where the country is, its physical features and climate, its people and languages, culture, how people earn a living, a challenge it faces and some fun facts. Using the right geographical words, such as hemisphere, latitude, landform and export, helps show what you have learned. Each card has prompts to fill in from your research, and the location card reminds you to use a map, which makes the talk much easier to follow.

Tips

  • Use recent figures for population and similar numbers from a reliable source such as an atlas, a national statistics office or a respected encyclopedia, and say which year the figure is from.
  • Describe culture respectfully and avoid stereotypes. Remember that every country has a variety of people, languages and traditions.
  • Bring a map, a flag or a picture, and point to features while you talk about them.
  • Practise pronouncing the names of cities, foods and festivals, and ask someone who knows the country if you can.
  • Keep fun facts for the end; they make a great finish and keep the audience listening.
  • Use a map with a scale and compass, and show where your own country is too, so classmates can picture the distance.
  • Keep your sources list at the end of your notes, as teachers often ask where you found your information.

Make it fit

  • For a shorter talk, combine physical features with climate, and people with culture.
  • For a country your family comes from, add a personal card with a story or object from home, if you are comfortable sharing.
  • For older students, add a card comparing the country with your own using two or three measures, such as climate or main industries.
  • For a US state, Australian state or Canadian province report, keep the same cards and change economy to main industries.
  • For a country report written in Year or Grade 3 or 4, choose four cards only, such as location, climate, culture and fun facts, and add a drawing to each one.
  • For an online presentation, share a map from an online atlas and zoom in on each region as you reach it.
