The cards

  1. 1

    Welcome

Before we start [the meeting / rehearsal / study], let's take five minutes to stop and reflect.

Get comfortable. Put phones face down.

  2. 2

    Reading

A short passage: [reference, e.g. a few verses you choose].

Read it slowly once. If time allows, invite someone else to read it a second time.

  3. 3

    One thought

What stands out to me is [a word or phrase from the reading].

It reminds us that [the one truth you want to share, in a sentence or two].

  4. 4

    Where I've seen this

[A short, honest example from your week: a conversation, a worry, something you noticed on the way here.]

    Keep it under a minute.

  5. 5

    Why it matters here

For us as [a team / a choir / a committee / a group of friends], this means [one practical link to what you are about to do together].

Maybe today that looks like [being patient in the discussion / encouraging someone / doing small work well].

  6. 6

    Reflect

A question to think about in silence:

[e.g. Where do I need this today? Who could I share this with?]

Allow 30 seconds of quiet. It will feel longer than it is.

  7. 7

    Pray

[A short prayer in your own words, or invite one or two people to pray.]

Remember [any needs shared in the group, people who are unwell, the work ahead today].

  8. 8

    Send off

Hold on to this one word today: [the key word].

Thank you. Now, let's [begin the meeting / sing / open the study].

How to use this template

A short devotional is a few minutes of reflection at the start of a meeting, a small group, a choir rehearsal, a committee or a Christian staff room. People are often asked to lead one at short notice, so this template gives you a calm, simple structure you can prepare in half an hour. It moves from a welcome to a brief reading, one thought, a real example from your own life, a moment of silent reflection, prayer and a single word to carry into the day. Five minutes is about 600 spoken words, including pauses, so keep each card short. The aim is not to preach a sermon but to help people slow down and notice something together. You can reuse the same seven cards every week by changing only the reading, the thought and your example.

Tips

  • Pick a reading of no more than five or six verses, and print it in large type on its own card if there is no screen.
  • Share one thought, not three. A devotional that tries to say everything usually leaves people with nothing.
  • Your own example matters more than a perfect story from a book; small and honest is enough.
  • Do not rush the silence. Count slowly to twenty in your head before you move to prayer.
  • Check how long the group expects the devotional to take, and finish on time so the meeting starts well.
  • Keep a notebook of small moments from your week that could become examples; it makes preparing at short notice much easier.

Make it fit

  • For a children's or youth group, use a picture or object instead of a long reading and ask the reflection question out loud.
  • For an ecumenical or interfaith setting, choose a reading and prayer that the hosts agree on, or use a moment of quiet thanks.
  • For an online meeting, ask everyone to turn off their microphones during the silence and to unmute for prayer requests.
  • For a series, keep the same structure each week and let a different person lead each time.
  • For a workplace or school staff devotional, make attendance clearly optional, keep it before the official start time, and follow your organisation's policy on religious activities.
