How to use this template

The notices are often the least prepared part of a church service, yet they shape how welcome visitors feel and whether people turn up to events. This template helps a service host, warden, elder or volunteer give announcements that are clear, friendly and short. The cards start with a warm welcome for newcomers, give practical information for today, list this week's events, highlight one bigger date with a clear next step, invite people to serve, mention giving without pressure on guests, and end with pastoral care and a smooth handover to the next part of the service. Three minutes is plenty. Anything longer belongs in the bulletin, app or newsletter, and the cards point people there. There is also an optional card for a 60-second story from one ministry, which often does more than any notice to get people involved.

Tips

  • Choose one main notice each week to highlight; if everything is important, nothing will be remembered.
  • Say the day, time and place for each event in the same order every time, so people learn where to listen.
  • Never name anyone who is unwell, in hospital or grieving without their permission or their family's.
  • Speak to visitors directly in the first and giving cards; regular members already know how things work.
  • Ask leaders to send notices to you by a fixed day, and politely move late ones to next week or the printed sheet.
  • Stand where everyone can see you, smile, and pause before you start; a confident host signals that the notices are worth hearing.
  • Read the notices aloud once before the service, checking names, dates and times against the bulletin so the spoken and printed versions match.

Make it fit

  • For a parish or liturgical service, give notices at the point your tradition expects, often near the end before the blessing.
  • For a bilingual congregation, give the main notice in each language and point people to a printed sheet for the rest.
  • For an online audience, add a line on how to connect online, give, or ask for prayer by message.
  • For a community group or club, replace giving with membership fees and replace prayer with how to ask for help.
  • For a large service with a screen, show one slide per card with the date and place in big type, and keep your spoken words even shorter.
