How to use this template

A back-to-school, meet-the-teacher or curriculum night is often the first time families see you, and it sets the tone for the whole year. This parent-teacher night presentation template helps primary and secondary teachers give a friendly, organised fifteen-minute overview. The cards introduce you, outline the year term by term, explain how lessons run, cover homework, assessment and reports, set out behaviour and wellbeing expectations, give families simple ways to help at home, explain how to stay in touch, and handle questions while protecting each child's privacy. Fill in the brackets with your school's terms, platforms and policies. Pair the cards with a one-page handout so families who could not attend still get the key information. A card on supporting every learner reassures families whose children need extra help or extra challenge.

Tips

  • Greet families at the door and learn a few names; the first impression matters more than the slides.
  • Avoid educational jargon and acronyms; explain terms like formative assessment in everyday words or leave them out.
  • Keep personal questions about individual children for a private meeting, and say so warmly at the start of questions.
  • Have a handout or a QR code to a short page with dates, contacts and homework expectations.
  • Think about families who speak other languages at home, and ask whether the school can provide interpreters or translated handouts.
  • Finish on time; many parents have younger children at home or another teacher's session to attend.

Make it fit

  • For a secondary subject teacher with many classes, focus on course content, assessment and exam dates, and drop the behaviour card if the year coordinator covers it.
  • For an early years or kindergarten class, add a card on settling in, drop-off and pick-up, and what to pack.
  • For a virtual information night, record the talk so families can watch later, and collect questions in the chat.
  • For international or bilingual schools, give the key points in each main family language.
  • For a parent-teacher interview (one-to-one), use only the progress, how you can help and staying in touch cards.
