Good [morning], everyone. My name is [your name], and I am a [second]-year student at [school name] High School.
Have you ever watched a playground for ten minutes? I did, last summer, and it changed my dream.
Smile. Look at the audience before the question.
One hot afternoon, I took my cousin [name] to the park near my house. [He] uses a wheelchair.
The other children were climbing, sliding and laughing. My cousin stayed on the path and watched. The sand was too soft for the wheels, and the slide had only steps.
[He] said, "It's OK. I like watching." But I could see that it was not OK.
On the way home, I kept asking myself one question: who is a park for?
A park is a public place. It should be for everyone. But that day, I learned that a place can be open to everyone and still not welcome everyone.
The gate was open, but the fun was closed.
Pause after this line.
So my dream is to become a landscape designer, a person who plans parks and public spaces.
I want to design playgrounds where children who walk, children who use wheelchairs and children who cannot see well can all play together.
Not side by side in different areas, but together, in the same game.
I know this dream will take many years, so I started with small steps.
I read books about universal design. I joined [the art club] to practise drawing plans. I also walked around my town with a notebook and wrote down every place where a wheelchair cannot go.
After one month, my list had [twenty] places on it. That surprised me.
I also discovered that people in many countries are working on the same problem. Some cities have swings for wheelchairs. Some parks have sound games for children who cannot see.
To learn from these people and to share ideas with them, I need English.
That is one big reason I am standing here today, speaking in English.
Of course, I have worries. I am not good at math yet, and designers need math. Sometimes I think my dream is too big for me.
But then I remember my cousin's face at the park.
A dream does not have to be easy. It only has to be important to you.
I would like to ask you to do one small thing.
The next time you visit a park, a station or even our school, look around for ten minutes. Ask yourself: can everyone enjoy this place?
You may find something that no one has noticed before.
Someday, I want to take my cousin to a park that I designed.
I want to see [him] go down the slide, laughing with the other children.
On that day, my dream will come true.
Thank you for listening.
Slow down. Bow after "Thank you."
